How to develop a leadership skills

Leadership has various different rooted characteristics. And this word – ‘Leadership’, which has very diversified notions, definitions, and characteristics. So it’s hard to make suggestions accurately. But there are various key characteristics, you can focus on them. Here are some of the highly recommended common characteristics, a student should acquire, but not limited to:

  • Goal-Orientedness
  • Honest
  • Hard-working
  • Responsibility
  • Positiveness
  • Encouraging
  • Good Communication
  • Good Listening
  • Willing to serve others

1. Goal Orientedness

You should be goal-oriented. You should have a desire for personal success and intrinsically set your own goals beyond the ones set by either teachers or parents. This is one of the very common characteristics of a student-leader. You might have noticed that in a friendship group, some of your friends immediately take charge and set the vision of the group. They are just saying, let’s play this game today! Let’s do this thing together! Let me show you some magic! Let’s plant these small trees together! etc. Overly saying, they can inspire others and set a goal for the group of students. So you have to acquire this skill set too.

2. Honest

This is another common characteristic among student-leaders. You have experienced this characteristic too in your classroom. One or more than one student is there in your classroom, who you can believe w.r.t his/her way of working ethically. In some of the important group tasks, we have all delegated these tasks to them like keeping collected money on the eve of some celebrations or keeping some record of class, etc. since we believe them w.r.t their honesty. So this is another dimension, on which you should have focus.

3. Hard-working

This is a very common characteristic among student-leaders. Sometimes you have experienced that we are usually very much inspired by the top-ranked students on their hard work in the subject(s). The student who got the first position in the class has worked very hard and inspired us to strive for excellence. Hard work has no substitute. So whether it is students’ life or further, hard-working wins everywhere. So you should work very hard. Don’t go for any shortcut in your life. Because there is nothing shortcut like this. Hope you understand!

4. Responsibility

This is one of the great characteristics of a student-leaders. And it is one of my favorite characteristics of leadership ever. Actually, you have experienced it in your class sometimes, especially in times of some special occasions. Whenever any problem comes after the end of the event (like some irregularities of collected money on the occasion of Ganesh Puja/ Saraswati Puja in school, or irregularity of service in annual function of school, etc. ), then the true student-leader don’t blame anyone, rather he/she takes responsibility for his/her part. Then he/she learns from it and does what’s needed to correct what has gone wrong. So try to adopt this skill set from your childhood.

5. Positiveness

This is also an important characteristic of a student-leader. Sometimes you have noticed that some students are very positive in all situations whether it may be either the time when the class teacher comes to class and announces a surprise test or the result announces the time. The positive guy just hassles the whole classroom, saying, friends don’t worry, all is well! So you need to adopt this style too. It helps a lot in other parts of life too.

6. Encouraging

The most recommended characteristic of a student-leader. You have noticed that the leader (maybe your classroom representative, CR) knows everyone’s strengths and weaknesses, so he/she just affirms and utilizes the strengths and assists in the area of weakness. So he/she is just encouraging in nature. And this nature helps a lot in influencing others. It helps in the workplace too. So be aware of it too.

7. Good Communication

Whenever an idea comes to the mind of a student-leader, he/she is just sharing it with others and asks for an opinion. He/she is able to communicate it with others well. You have experienced that, your Class representative can just convenience something very easily. Do you know how? Only due to good communication level.  So good communication plays a major role while sharing your idea, reflecting your notion in front of others. And for your kind information, this skillset is highly recommended for all students, since by means of this skillset, you can communicate very easily and share your opinion with the world. So be a good communicator!

8. Good Listening

This is a highly recommended characteristic of leadership. You have experienced that some of the good student-leaders are just listening to others’ views while working in a group. They are not only just giving importance to their view; but also to others’ views. Overly saying, they are more receptive to others’ feedback and willing to compromise. So make a habit of listening well. Because this is a measure of your internal patience. It will help you a lot in the latter part of your life. Because the world loves the people who listen well. No one loves talkers more.

9. Willing to Serve to others

These are the most essential characteristics of a leader. If your classroom is lucky, you might have seen such a type of student-leader, who is willing to serve others very often. They just want what is best for other students and are willing to go out of their way to serve them. So have a will to serve something to others. Maybe it will drive you to become a great business person in the future. Because this characteristic has very dominant power among all the above eights. If you have this one, you can become a great leader in the future. It is the very core characteristic of leadership.

Hope you understand clearly how you can develop your leadership skills.
